History of the day for January 25

In 1603, Galileo Galilei publishes his sun-centered model of the solar system, drawing a life sentence from the Inquisition. Over 300 years later he is pardoned by Pope John Paul II who states that clearly the Roman Catholic Church was wrong, but by the same token it was not particularly suave of Galileo to call those believing in the earth-centered model "prancing retards."
