Recently, one of Bush's neighbors shot his gun in the air near the group that is having a month long vigil in protest of the war in Iraq. When the Secret Service asked him what the hell he was doing, his response was "I ain't threatening nobody, and I ain't pointing a gun at nobody. This is Texas.''
Would someone who is from Texas or lives in Texas explain how this is an excuse to fire a gun in the air near peaceful protesters?

I too am a city boy, but I have lived with Heartland folks out here for a while. Let's see if I can explain this: guns are for shooting. Typically at an animal, but if nothing is in season or if nothing has crawled onto your property, then you shoot it in the air. The fact that protesters are nearby is irrelevant. Guns are for shooting.
I think (if I remember the story fully) that he said he was oringally supportive of their right to protest, but they've since been blocking the road to his place (which has also been lined with multiple port-o-potties, for the protestors).
So, since he was 'getting ready for dove season', he fired off some rounds from his shotgun, which the protestors overheard/saw and were scared of.
But, the bottom line still remains...he lives on a Ranch. In Texas.
He's exercising his rights as an American just as much as the Protestors are exercising theirs. No harm, no foul.
It's also important to define what you mean by "near." If you mean standing within earshot on your own property, then stop whining. If you mean five feet away while quietly muttering, then you have a reasonable complaint.
